Controls

These are the control for the default setting of the US version:

In the field

D-pad/Left Analog-Stick: Moves party around and highlight choices

Start: Brings up the rumble features.

X: Starts conversations, picks up items, activate switches, examine
ladders, confirms choices.

Triangle: Cancel. To Walk/Displays press together with D-pad

Card Battle

Square: Starts conversation or begin a card game with an opponent.

Circle: Displays the menu screen.

R1+R2+L1+L2+Select+Start: You must pause the game then press these buttons, this would reset your game. It's called soft-reset.

On the Overworld

D-pad/Left Analog-Stick: Moves party, vehicle on the world map or use it to highlight a choice.

Right Analog-Stick: Moves vehicle forward or backward

Start: Brings up the rumble features.

Select: Toggles the World Sphere/Map on/off

X: Mount/dismount vehicle, search locations.

Triangle: Reverses vehicle

Square: Accelerates vehicle

Circle: Displays the menu screen

R1: Rotates the camera clockwise

L1: Rotates the camera anti-clockwise

R2: Switches between view points

R1+R2+L1+L2+Select+Start: You must pause the game then press these buttons, this would reset your game. It's called soft-reset.

In Battle

D-pad/Left Analog-Stick: Highlights commands

Start: Brings the rumble features

Select: Hides all windows when held down

X: Confirms selected command

Triangle: Cancels and closes windows

Square: Once your GF learn the boost ability, hold down select and keep tapping Square rapidly to boost up your GF's attack damages, stop when the icon is red; practices will increase this skill. Press to scroll in the status window if a character is affected by any conditions.

Circle: Hit to switch to another character who has a full time bar

R1: When trigger at the right time, this would causes Squall or Seifer to double the damages to the opponent (Gun-Blade), press it rapidly to trigger Irvine's limit breaks.

L1: Toggles the target window on/off

R2+L2: Escapes from battle, does not work on bosses though.

In the Menu Screen

D-pad/Left Analog-Stick: Moves scroll bar left or
right in the Junction, Item, Magic, G.F,
Abilities and Card screens or use it to move the cursor

X: Confirms the selected command / Specials chart in the Status screens / Brings up the Abilities list in the G.F. screens and brings up the Element, Status, G.F.

Triangle: Cancels the selected command and closes the menu screen

Square: Displays character's Specials chart / Removes junctioned magic spell

R1/L1: Switches between characters or G.Fs
